First off, I hate the snow. I am, however, one of the few people whose favourite season is winter. It’s my favourite because I have a love affair with layering, and I make a mean hot chocolate. Coats are a staple when layering to for the cold weather months. Here are seven of my favourites for this season.
Ombre Wool Moto Jacket | Jersey Maxi T-Shirt Dress | 5 Pocket Denim
This Gap coat incorporates two trends that have been around for a while, ombre and the moto look, while still remaining new and fresh. This coat is great for the transition in and out of winter. The shorter length is needed for those days where it hasn’t gotten too cold yet, and we want to take advantage of those lingering fall days. This coat pairs well with a pair of high waisted jeans or a knee length bodycon dress. Because black and grey are neutrals, try it with a fun colour denim or dress.
Vila Ikat Pant | Pale Pink H&M Jacket (Available in-stores) | Berek Pant
To me, this is a modernized Jackie O coat, and who doesn’t love a presidential look? The pale pink colour adds a lightness to the winter coat, that is typically unexpected for colder months. When you walk into a room on a snowy grey day, this coat will bring a smile to everyone, as they think about the beginning of spring. This coat pairs well with that pair of printed or textured pants you have sitting in the back of your closet.
Devine Goddess Lipstick | Colour Block Funnel Neck Coat | The Skinny Nouveau Jean
This J Crew coat is my definition of fun. Props to Jenna Lyons on this. The colour blocking is modern with a throw to the 60’s. The colours are unexpected, but work well together. Typically I am an ‘all black everything’ type of dresser, however this coat may have changed that! This coat pairs well with denim and a coral lip.
Coat with Leather Sleeve | Colour Block Scarf | Faux Leather Legging
This Zara coat is what I envision all the cool girls at school wearing. The tweed is the right amount of black to remain a neutral, with a perfect pop of unexpected colour with the white, grey, and orange in the twill. The leather sleeves make this a tougher look while still remaining elegant. This coat pairs well with a pair of black leather leggings and a salmon coloured scarf or lip to highlight the accent colour in the tweed.
Velvet Pencil Skirt | Grey Fit-and-Flare Bow Coat | Petite Ponte 3/4 Sleeve Flounce Dress
This Banana Republic coat is a feminine party coat. It’s what I think Taylor Swift would wear if she came to my Christmas house party. The coat embodies classic female form with the waistband, the length and the gathered shoulders. The bow detail is fun and surprising, but because the coat is tailored everywhere else, it doesn’t succumb to the bow curse and look like it should be worn by a kindergartener. This pairs well with your favourite holiday dress or skirt.
Labratoire Coat | Leather Look Panel Pants | BCBG Legging
This plaid Wilfred coat is the pure embodiment of simplicity executed perfectly. The plaid is just the right size to make a statement, without overpowering you. The colours have a strong and soft juxtaposition, making it the perfect coat to wear if you want to look effortlessly chic. This coat pairs well with any dark pant; my favourite would be a legging with leather detailing.
Ultra Skinny Black Jeans | Samantha Coat | Black Brim Hat
This Mackage coat is sure to draw heads! The bright coral colour is what drew my to this coat. I absolutely love the contrast of the coral wool to the black buttons and leather detailing. What makes this Mackage coat so interesting is the exposed side zipper. Located on the side seams, the zippers add a little surprise to the coat. You can also unzip them to adjust how breezy the coat is. This coat pairs well with a pair of black jeans and a black wide brimmed hat or toque.
